foreword
It all started at the end of 1984 when a group of Indian friends was sitting together in a car and discussing what New Year resolutions they were making. One of the ladies earnestly said that she would like to do charity and the others said, "we are already doing charity". The answer was, let's get organized and really do charity... just like that, on a snowy morning on 2nd January 1985 we formed the Indian Women's Charity Association or IWCA which has now become a household name within our community.
We are now over 150 members and nine committee members, working hard to bring help wherever it is needed. We are a lay organization, with no racial prejudice, all joined by the need to give back to society by helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Having said that, we do favor projects in India and in Spain, although our scope is not strictly limited to these geographical areas. We have helped wherever calamity has struck, be it Haiti, or Nepal, or Kerala.
We are a nonprofit organization which raises funds by hosting social events as well as relying heavily on the largesses of our Indian community in Spain for donations. Our members pay a yearly sum but also contribute during the year to the various schemes that we put forward.
In our first year, 1985, we sent out a type-written circular at the end of the year to inform our members of our activities; in 1986 we sent out two circulars. Today we send out a bimonthly newsletter with detailed reports of all our activities, as well posting them on Instagram and Facebook. This ensures that our members are kept abreast of our activities.
We move with the times but the essence of our purpose is unaltered - we selfishly give where help is needed, be it education, food, medicines or any other type of support. We are all volunteers and work pro bono to make the world a better place, one life at a time. Our success is entirely due to the hard work of our committee members, both past and present, and to the generosity of our members.
Let us open our hearts and extend our hands to give and see more smiling faces in this world.
